How to choose IoT data plans for a device fleet

Measure data use for each device group, including software updates and other peaks. Compare plan allowances, pooling rules, fees, and compatibility against those measurements.

Measure normal and exceptional usage

  • Application payloads, frequency of reporting, and protocol overhead.
  • Health checks, reconnects, retries, and remote troubleshooting.
  • Firmware or software downloads and seasonal workload changes.
  • The distribution of usage across devices, including outliers.

Separate per-device usage from fleet totals

Record monthly usage per device in MB or GB and keep that separate from the fleet total. For example, 100 devices at an estimated 50 MB each imply about 5,000 MB of base monthly traffic before additional overhead or updates. This is a planning calculation, not a plan quote.

Compare the charging structure

A per-device allowance and a shared pool can behave differently when usage varies. Review which lines are eligible to pool, applicable minimums, overage handling, and any usage restrictions. Compare the complete cost and terms rather than assuming pooling is always cheaper.

Check compatibility, services, and terms

  • Device and network compatibility, SIM format, and supported deployment geography.
  • SMS requirements, addressing, private connectivity, and application access.
  • Activation schedule, deployment services, management, and support.
  • Commercial eligibility, commitment, fees, and what happens when the fleet changes.

Test with a small group of devices

Measure actual usage on devices and locations that reflect the planned deployment. Revisit the plan if actual traffic or operating requirements differ. Advisor can help explore Kajeet options using the requirements you provide; eligibility and pricing depend on the specific configuration.

Common questions

Can I start with estimated usage?

Yes. Label the estimate and explain the workload behind it. Validate it against representative device usage before relying on it for a larger deployment.

Should I size plans using only the fleet average?

No. Understand both the average and variation between devices, including large updates and high-usage outliers.

Are all data plans eligible for pooling?

No. Pooling availability and rules depend on the specific plan and configuration.
